Gowanda’s Memorial Day Remembrance 2023!

This morning’s beautiful weather hosted our village’s Memorial Day parade and ceremony at St John’s Park!

The annual event marched off on downtown Main Street with parade participants stepping off just a few short hours ago. The parade featured performances from our school’s marching bands, fire trucks from surrounding departments, & a proud patriotic spirit. Although the route was compressed this year, St John Park marked the finish line nonetheless.

Once everyone arrived at the park, the ceremony began with Pastor Nace leading the crowd in religious prayer. Mayor David Smith, joined by our American Legion Post 409, proceeded with this year’s remembrance. Memorial Day is dedicated to the military men and women who have given their lives to protect the American way of life. Our community gathered around St John’s flagpole to pay respects to those brave servicemembers who are no longer with us.

We arrived early this morning to set decorations ahead of the special event. Miniature flags & pinwheels were placed beneath the hedgerow, and bouquets of flowers were laid under the Malus pink spires, the trees dedicated to our nation’s fallen heroes. The ceremony area was the focus of our Beautifying Gowanda series’ launch just a couple of weeks ago, and we were thrilled to see it all come together today!

Thank you kindly for your time, and welcome to summer!
