Celebrating Red, White, & Mulch Over the Holiday Weekend!
As part of our “Beautifying Gowanda” series, we’ve refreshed St. John’s Park for Memorial Day!
Beautifying Gowanda is our seasonal program dedicated to improving public recreational spaces across the village. Through outdoor work and maintenance, we aim to make these areas more welcoming for local families and the entire community. This week, we prepared St. John’s Park for Gowanda’s Memorial Day remembrance ceremony.
We trimmed the hedgerow, mulched around the trees, and replaced the flagpole’s stone base. We also created a special new feature: a half-moon bed in the park’s corner, planted with four Kindred Spirit Oak trees. Known for their strength and resilience, these trees symbolize four American soldiers who are no longer with us.
On March 25, 2025, four U.S. Army service members lost their lives in a training accident while deployed in Lithuania, a Baltic country in northeastern Europe. We honor Staff Sergeant (SSG) Jose Duenez, SSG Edvin Franco, Private First Class Dante Taitano, and SSG Troy Knutson-Collins. Memorial Day is a time to remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. These soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice, and we are forever grateful.
Special thanks to Schichtel’s Nursery and Moore in Zoar Lawn Care for their generous support. Becky & Travis — we couldn’t have done this without you!
Join us for Gowanda’s Memorial Day Parade on Monday at 10:30 AM, with the remembrance ceremony to follow at St. John’s Park. Have a safe and meaningful weekend, Gowanda!
