Beautifying Gowanda Series: St John Park Memorial Day Effort

Fun In The Sun at St John Park!

We beautified St John Park ahead of Memorial Day last week through our new “Beautifying Gowanda” series!

Beautifying Gowanda is our new seasonal program to improve public recreational areas throughout the village. This series will feature outdoor work & maintenance at several parks in the upcoming summers, all to turn them into more welcoming places for local families and our community as a whole. With Gowanda’s Memorial Day remembrance just around the corner, we picked the ceremony area at St John’s as the perfect place to kickstart the series in 2023!

Each year, the ceremony centers itself on the park’s flagpole. Our effort began with adding a white stone base to highlight the flagpole’s memorial plaque. We then transitioned to the adjacent overgrown hedgerow. Over a few days, we cleared debris nestled in its roots, removed invasive trees that didn’t belong, and circled the hedgerow with mulch. We also planted two malus pink spire trees around the ceremony area, dedicated to our country’s fallen heroes.

We want to thank The Gowanda Lions Club & VFW Post 5007 for their generous donations towards this effort and Schichtel’s Nursery for donating the sentimental trees. When it came time for planting, Superior Seal helped us in the blazing sunlight of last Saturday afternoon, and we couldn’t have been more grateful. Most importantly, we want to thank our team of volunteers who got their hands dirty to make it all come together!

Thank you kindly for your time, and we hope you have a great rest of your day!
